*NEW Telehealth (Video-Conferencing)

We recognize that many of our patients benefited from and have come to expect a more hands on approach via manual therapy and the use of modalities, however at this time, as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, we are unable to open our clinic in its regular capacity due to the need for public safety.

Telehealth can connect our Physiotherapists and Kinesiologists with patients in real time.  The sessions can be accessed by patients with a smart phone (these have a built-in camera), tablet, ipad, desktop, or laptop with an external or built in webcam.  The goal of these sessions is to provide therapeutic benefit via:

  • Active exercise
  • Functional progression
  • Education
  • Self management
  • Self mobilization
  • Monitoring (such as for external signs of swelling, redness, etc.)

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are licenced professionals. Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of physical dysfunction, for the purpose of promoting good physical function and the relief of pain

Our physiotherapists can treat your area of concern using multiple modalities. This may include using manual techniques, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, or laser modalities, providing acupuncture, giving exercises, taping, or exercise prescription. Education is also an important part of our service.

Kinesiology

Kinesiologists study the anatomy, physiology and mechanics of body movement. Our accredited kinesiologists are human movement specialists. Their role is to evaluate physical activity-related matters and recommend solutions in health, exercise, rehabilitation and sport. Kinesiology may become part of your physiotherapy treatment plan and will involve an education in movement and exercise.

Our kinesiologists will develop an active treatment plan for you based on your individual needs. It can consist of a gentle session inside of our clinic to help you stretch and move through the acute phase of your injury, it can consist of developing a rigorous fitness routine to help you come back from a sports injury, or it can be any number of things in between. A kinesiology session will always involve educating you on the best posture to keep while doing any exercises.

Hydrotherapy

Located in the heart of the mission leisure center, our therapists can provide services both on land and in the water! Hydrotherapy is an excellent option for active rehabilitation, as the decreased gravitational force causes low resistance and less stress on weight bearing joints. Hydrotherapy is typically recommended to patients who suffer from lower extremity pain, motor vehicle accidents, fibromyalgia, and arthritis. There are many benefits including strengthening weak muscles, increasing circulation, increasing range of motion and improving of balance and coordination.

Anatomical Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a therapeutic method used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin and tissues at very specific points on the body. “Anatomical” acupuncture refers to a more modern approach taken today by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (AFCI). It combines acupuncture with a physiotherapist’s knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to effectively treat clients. Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving chemicals called endorphins. The improved energy and biomechanical balance produced by acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities, reducing inflammation, and promoting physical and emotional well-being.

There is almost a complete absence of adverse effects and complications from the use of acupuncture. People experience differing sensations with acupuncture. Most clients feel only minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted and some feel no pain at all. Once the needles are in place there should be no discomfort at all. Our clinic uses only sterile disposable needles, preventing any risk of infection. The number of treatments will vary with each individual and the condition being treated. In some cases, one treatment will be sufficient. For complex or longstanding conditions, one or two treatments a week for several weeks may be recommended.

It is recommended that you eat a small meal consisting of some protein prior to your acupuncture treatment and that you do not receive acupuncture on an empty stomach. The therapist will want to know if you are taking any blood thinners, are pregnant, suffer from haemophilia, or have a pacemaker. It will be recommended that you avoid alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes for at least 2 hours after your treatment. Avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day of your treatment.

Women’s Health

Individual Physiotherapy treatments and kinesiology sessions:

With a specialized approach to women’s health and core rehabilitation we strive to create treatment plans that work toward treating core weakness. Utilizing a combination of hands-on therapy and functional training we build towards restoring core strength and overall function. These techniques focus on re-engaging the loop between the brain and core muscles enabling them to once again work in harmony as they’re intended to. Throughout the process, emphasis on re-engaging deep core muscles, which stabilize the spine and pelvic floor are targeted. Our specialized program provides step by step progressions along with strategies and tools specific to your needs. The overall process is multifaceted and includes re-education, motor learning, postural control and functional core training.

Our approach to women’s health and core specific rehabilitation combine to help treat:

  • Low back pain
  • Pelvic instability
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Incontinence
  • Diastasis recti abdominis

In addition, we also provide therapy specific to:

  • Pre & post-natal fitness and rehabilitation
  • Labor & delivery training

With core training, expectant mothers can prevent diastasis recti, gain strength and coordination of the abdominals and pelvic floor and maintain optimal fetal alignment for delivery. With a postnatal program new mothers can heal diastasis recti, pelvic floor dysfunction, sciatica and other low back issues, as well as gain strength and proper posture to provide pain-free care to their children.
